Showcase: Social-Emotional Learning with MOPCO Improv Theater at Lincoln Community School
Grant funding from the Schenectady City School District Education Foundation (SCSDEF) has opened up exciting opportunities for students at Lincoln Community School. Thanks to the support of SCSDEF, the school's counseling department was able to partner with The MOPCO Improv Theatre to deliver a six-week improv and social-emotional learning program to 4th and 5th-grade students.
The Yes And! Social Emotional Learning Program utilized basic improv techniques to help students develop crucial skills such as communication, collaboration, self-confidence, and positive self-identity. The engaging and interactive program provided a unique platform for students to explore their creativity, build resilience, and strengthen their emotional well-being.
The program's impact was nothing short of remarkable. Students embraced the improv exercises and demonstrated significant growth in their ability to express themselves effectively, work together as a team, and embrace a positive mindset. The culmination of their hard work was showcased in a student performance at two school assemblies, which were attended by students from Pre-K through 4th grade. The positive response from both students and faculty was overwhelming.
Buoyed by this success, the Lincoln Community School is now in the planning process for a second show that will include the participation of the entire school. This expansion speaks to the value and impact of the Yes And! program and the dedication of the SCSDEF to provide innovative learning experiences for students.
Through the grant funding received from SCSDEF, Lincoln Community School has been able to create an environment where students can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. The partnership with The Mopco Improv Theatre has proven to be a catalyst for personal growth and empowerment.
The SCSDEF continues to play a vital role in supporting educational initiatives that go beyond traditional teaching methods. By investing in programs like the Yes And! Social Emotional Learning Program, the foundation is making a lasting impact on the lives of students, fostering their personal development and equipping them with essential skills for success.
