Showcase: Nurturing Independence and Community Awareness at Oneida Middle School
With recent funding from the SCSDEF, students at Oneida Middle School have had the opportunity to delve deeper into their community, acquiring essential skills to navigate it safely.
This project has been instrumental in empowering students with the confidence and knowledge they need to move about their community in a secure and informed manner. The students have undergone training that focuses on safely using sidewalks, crosswalks, and traffic signals surrounding Oneida Middle School. These vital skills ensure that our students can navigate their surroundings with ease, understanding the importance of safe pedestrian practices.
Furthermore, this initiative has equipped students with the necessary tools to utilize public transportation effectively. Through the guidance provided by SCSDEF, students have learned how to use Google to access bus schedules and locate bus stops. Building on this newfound knowledge, they are now capable of traveling independently and confidently to various exciting destinations such as the Via Aquarium, MiSci, and ShopRite.
The program's impact extends beyond basic navigation skills. Students have also received training on how to ride the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) safely and responsibly. By understanding appropriate behavior on public transportation, our students are becoming responsible citizens who contribute positively to the community.
We are so excited to witness the transformative effects of this program. Through the generosity of SCSDEF, our students are gaining a sense of independence, self-assurance, and an increased awareness of their community. These skills will undoubtedly serve them well not only during their time at school but throughout their lives.
