2015-2016 Recipients

Bonheim,Alison & Jennifer Mack:  MPMS $969
The Book Club of 20 students will work with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children as a novel, as a graphic novel and as a movie. They will explore changes in the various formats and discussions will be held during lunch time and at a special dinner paid for by the grant. Assessment: pre and post surveys and student journals.

Christman, Cindy:  Woodlawn $1800
This is an author study for the entire building.  Every student will read one of his books and participate in group study.  The author will visit the school. Questionnaires will be used for assessments.

Dobson,Jennifer:  ACC Pleasant Valley  $1000
She will buy two new IPads to increase time on reading and math activities that are fun and engaging for 22 students. Assessment: web data, Fountas, math unit tests.

Fagan, Lisa:  Zoller  $1500     Partial $750
The grant involves 12 students with severe disabilities.  The money is for food and eqyipment she can use with them to teach them how to cook.  They will improve reading skills, measuring skills, real life skills, decision-making skills, motor skills, etc.  She will monitor and record progress through observation.

Foley, Liz:  Central Park  $646.39
Students will research family history and create a cookbook and execute their recipes.  Half is for food and half is for a Reading and Writing Center where students will learn about research, collaboration, classroom behavior, etc.  11 learning disabled students. Assessment is the cookbook, the food produced and teacher observation.

Gentile, Rick: Keane  $500
He will buy 5 kindles to use with his 5 reading groups. Games will be used to promote literacy & reading.  Existing assessments will measure increased reading skills.

Grattan, Stephanie: MLK $1056.60     Partial  $500
She is a reading teacher working with 116 students.  She wants to buy books that will interest the kids and that will be used on “Independent Reading Days.” She will track what books are read and will talk to students individually.

Hart, Jennifer MPMS  $700
They are taking 48 eighth graders to Washington on May.  The money will be used for group T shirts and subsidies for students who need help with the costs.  Assessment will be based on the 8th grade final exam and a writing assignment.

Hawk, Krista: SHS $600
She will purchase 3 Casio 76-keyboards for 119 piano students. Beginners will be proficient but she does not say how.  She will send pictures and videos.

Heller, Christopher: CPIMS $905
13 students will build cigar box guitars and they will join a club to learn how to play the instruments. Culminating activity is a performance by Recycled Percussion at Proctors.  They will do assemblies and classroom performances. Success will be measured by the creation of the guitars and the performances.

Hulsaver, Jody: Fulton  $400
This is for a field trip for 33 students to Five Rivers as a follow up to work they are doing in class with her students. Students will create a KWL chart with writing pieces as their assessment.  Students will also keep notebooks.

Barbara LeBarron:  FDR  $395
This is for a field trip to the Mabee Farm for 25 students. She gives a detailed rationale and description of activities. Assessment will be a living museum performance by the students and they will write journals.

Lamont, Kim: Keane  $840
Six teachers want to invite the Scotia Glenville Traveling Museum to do presentations for K-2 classes (3 programs to each of two classes for a total of 6 classes).  For assessment students will write/draw documents including facts that they learned and they will use their documents to teach other students.

La Mora, Katie: SHS  $1680
She wants to buy 15 CPO Science Crazy Traits Equipment Modules, which is a fun manipulative that helps students learn about genetics and evolution through a series of games and activities. 120 students. She will do formative and summative assessments to measure success.

Elizabeth Mark,Kris Dangelo,Sheila Green: MPMS  $760
They are doing a project called “Connecting with Schenectady History” and the money would fund field trips to the Stockade and Mabee Farm for 40 students (most of them are ESL students).  They will also read Double Dutch. Assessment will be based on results of the NYSESLAT, power point presentations, written reports, etc.

McKoy,Betsy et. al. Keane  $1520
They will bus 45 sixth graders and 10 chaperones to Watkins Glen State park on May 26 for a tour where they will learn about glaciers, erosion, fossils, etc. and geologic history. Students will do writing assignments comparing experiments and text with what they learn in the experience.

Miller,Erin & Mike Gauthier  $1256
They want to replenish kits for the VEX robotics competition for the Robotics club (40-100 students).  $628 would allow two teams to compete and the larger amount would fund four teams for two competitions.  Classes could also use the materials Merely participating would be proof of success.

Neugebauer, Julie et.al.: MPMS  $720
They want to buy a year’s subscription to Mangahigh.com to be used by 60 students at school and at home.  It allows access to more appropriate curriculum & materials, tracking of student work, differentiation, student reports, etc. Program helps assess student progress providing teachers with useful data. If Tech Coordinator signs off.

Parrella, Stephanie  & Heather DeFillipo  Van Corlaer  $500
They will buy Scholastic books for one first grade class & one K class for summer reading.  Each student gets a bag of 10 books.  Assessment will be done by comparing June and September test results. We did this last year; 12 of 17 remained on level.

Phillips, Agnes et.al.: SHS  $1000
The Chemistry teachers want to purchase a 2 stage vacuum pump, vacuum chamber with plate and 10 ft tubing and bell jar for lab activities performed on Gas Laws.  Assessment will be based on a unit test, laboratory activity and reports, student designed tests, and  a questionnaire.

Preston, Amy: SHS  $400
To reinforce student positive behavior select students are invited to  a holiday party where they make up to 2 gifts for their family members. Selection is based on behavior and need. There is a weekly luncheon where they discuss needs and behavior.  Money is for food and supplies.

Rottger, Cecilia:  Paige  $1297.69
She wants to expand the Take A Book Home Program so that there are more backpacks and books for ENL students and others.  End of the year reading data will be analyzed and shared Students will do reading logs. Parent feedback

Schaeffer, Molly: MPMS $700
She will take 30 of the dedicated French students to a creperie to order in French,       understand a talk by the chef, experience the making of the crepe. Students will have a  writing assignment as part of the assessment.

Thornhill, Michelle et. al.:  Steinmetz $1500     Partial     $1000
Money will be used to buy gift cards, electronics. Food for awards to students who  have good behavior. They will monitor student behavior to measure success.

Vrooman, Juliana & Lori Lebel:  SHS  $4,650     Partial  $2800
They want to buy copies of Persepolis and Persepolis 2 for 120 students who will also experience a Persian meal and create a culminating project. This will involve the entire 9-1 team and students. Assessment:completion of the project and writing assignments.

Wright, Amy:  SHS & Steinmetz   $1151.98
She will buy 2 electron microscopes for use by her Food Scinece classes and her Food Nutrition class.  Students will do experiments and create lab reports and take a multiple choice test.
